Misfortune Comes to an End; Better Times Return

Today we received Splitting Apart 23 with the sixth line changing forming the Earth or Natural Response 2.  Splitting Apart is one of the least pleasant of all hexagrams.  The image is of an arrogant ruler who tries to take everything below up with him but is undermined from below.  It is also of a too narrow mountain that is likely to fall over. When it comes up, especially if repeated, it is a good indication that things are off track. However, the fifth and sixth lines are favorable.  A few weeks ago we had this hexagram with the fourth line changing.  Here it is the sixth which indicates that the Splitting Apart is over, that misfortune has spent itself and better times return.  'There is a fruit uneaten.'  'The superior man is given a carriage, the inferior man is destroyed.' By our actions, we can determine whether we are inferior of superior -- generally, those who consult the I Ching are superior.  The result is the Earth or Natural Response 2 -- it suggests a passive, accepting state is best. Let the world in so Fate can work through us.

  1. This was e-mailed to me by an old friend EC:
If indeed this is true, then it would promise relief from the pressures of "intrusions" that have been marked and difficult to handle, and perhaps now I can look forward to a general growing respectfulness (though I may be a little too idealistic)and a little more personal ease of heart and mind. Thanks for the good words.
